Samantha Penning is much like any eleven year-old, with one exception she has a secret job. It sometimes requires her to sneak out at night and venture into the dark woods behind her house. That’s her favorite part of being a Protectling. The Woodlanders rely on her to keep them safe, in every season. Sam is certain in her devotion to them and can’t imagine summer without their Lantern Lighting or fall without the Butternut Harvest. But things are changing, and her life away from the woods is expanding and filling up with other responsibilities. As spring awakens the woods after a long winter, the time has come for Sam to face the one thing she cannot change. **Ages 10 and up.

The back cover of the book indicates the book is for "Ages 10 and up." I believe the "and up" segment definitely should read this. This is the story of one young girl, Samantha Penning, her family, and her friends from the woods, the Woodlanders - little people that she acts as a protector for. The author, Carolyn Heilman, does a superb job in taking the reader back to when they were age 11, finding the smallest detail to bring the story home (dividing setting the table up into kids jobs and older sibling helping younger, or telling stories to her little brother, making him and his stuffed animal the central characters). But it's the coming of age aspect that really sticks with me - that point where people lose the childhood innocence we have as we become more responsible adults. The Woodlanders call them Dumans - when their "character shifted from human beings to human doings." Samantha is reaching the age where she will have more responsibilities and less time to spend with her Woodlander friends. The changes weigh on her mind, but her devotion to the Woodlanders is boundless. The art work, also done by Ms. Heilman, is wonderful - she's multi-talented, and I am looking forward to the follow-up to this story, "The Protectlings - On the Common."

The Protectlings At Woods Edge Carolyn Heilman 9780986280320 Books Reviews

It has been my practice to read a book before gifting it to a child. The Protectlings At Woods Edge by Carolyn Heilman intrigued me as much of my youth was spent scouring the woods surrounding my rural home. Heilman is a captivating storyteller and a gifted illustrator. I predict The Protectlings will become a treasured classic. Amongst the pages you will discover intrigue, humor, adventure, and lovely life lessons. It is a story for children and adults alike. Ah, the woods....what secrets they hold. Marvelous!
This book will make anyone want to get outside and feel like a part of nature. Often when we spend time outdoors we begin to feel a part of something bigger than ourselves. Heilman does a beautiful job of illustrating the message that every living thing is connected.
While this story is an imaginative children’s tale, it highlights fundamental truths of life, making it a good read for any age. Along with our connection to all living things, Heilman portrays how to be happy to be useful and to help others to the best of our ability. We see this through Samantha's joy of helping the Woodlanders. One of my favorite quotes of the book is “Shine light into the darkness, and always light the way for others,” (Page 83).
This book left me with much to think about, and I look forward to the sequel!
The book grabbed me from the moment I begin reading. I loved the imagery and the story. The message of caring for our wilderness and others is heard, without overtaking the story. I think we can all relate to the main character, as she realizes she is going to lose part of the magic of her childhood. A good read, and anxious to read the next book.
Just finished reading this incredible book! It reminded me of how much I loved reading " My Side of the Mountain" (by Jean Craighead George) to my son---I couldn't wait for bedtime to snuggle in and read. As a Grandparent, I look forward to purchasing individual copies and reading Heilman's "The Protectlings" to all of our grandchildren. Heilman's book combines the beauty of story telling so rich in the intricate details of nature and so delightfully fanciful to engage the imaginations of young and old alike!
So why would an old guy like me want to read a children's book? Easy answer like most things in this world, we hear about good stuff by word-of-mouth. And that's why I bought Heilman's "The Protectlings." Good move, because in the first pages, I became entranced. The writing is crisp, the action moves briskly, and the idea is charming. And the ending – well, I'll not be a spoiler. You'll have to read it yourself. But I think you'll be surprised by the depth of personal feeling that that ending provokes in you. And – any kids you might know would love the book – but they'll probably love it for a different reason.

I've been following this writer through her wonderful blog "The Mandala Writers Circle" and was delighted to see that Heilman had written a book (her book reviews are just terrific). I was not disappointed after reading this wonderful tale. I could feel, touch, hear, sense every detail in this charming book that will leave all ages teary eyed (for different reasons). I will put this book in a safe place and save it for the day that I can read it to grandchildren! A very special find...
The author has succeeded in conveying that wonderful connection to nature that one has as a child, before the weight of the world overtakes it. Her clear message of respecting that connection will resonate not only with preteens but anyone that reads this enchanting tale. Reading as an adult, one will also, and not without melancholy, recognize how and when that connection becomes severed for most of us, a bittersweet message that might be lost on some but not all of the target audience and will hopefully encourage young readers to maintain it as long as they possibly can. The rich details of the book are conveyed in an age-appropriate fashion with language that is just creative enough to distinguish this soon-to-be series from other preteen series. I will look forward to the sequel.
