Theodore Engdahl’s sexual identity crisis clashes with his faith. Raised to believe homosexuality is a sin, Theo finds himself on the ropes with his girlfriend as well as his straight coworker, whom he can’t stop staring at. Luckily, before he can panic too much, Theo discovers the support system provided by the Men’s Center.
At the center, he meets Alex, and the two hit it off. Unlike Theo, Alex wears his sexuality like a favorite shirt. Alex is also easy on the eyes, but for Theo, following his example is anything but uncomplicated.
With a little help from Alex and his mentors, Ian and Harper, Theo realizes that living well requires courage. While he struggles to take the next step with Alex and to come out to his conservative parents, life beneath the palisade goes on. But when Alex and his boat disappear during a terrible storm, Theo must find the strength to hope.

What can I say about this story except I loved every word. I had read the first one Beneath the Palisade: Reliance and didn't think the story could get any better but found out I was wrong after reading this one. Story grabs you at the beginning and doesn't let you go until the end. Enjoyed watching Theo come to terms with his sexuality as he fell in love with Alex. One thing I must say about this author is you get your money's worth with his stories as he gives you enough pages to really sink your teeth into and become part of the story unlike other authors that write a story for a couple of dollars and give you 80 pages to read and I always wonder how you can get a reader into a story with so few pages and I guess that is why I don't buy them. I hope that Joel continue's with another in this series. So looking forward to it.Product details

This book is a wonderful sequel to "Beneath the Palisade Reliance". While this book can stand on its own, you will be doing yourself a great disservice if you do not read "Reliance" first. I purchased them at the same time and read them back to back. This volume picks up the story of the characters lives as they live, love, laugh and cry while running a small vacation paradise resort. This part of their story begins three years after the conclusion of the first novel in the series. It also adds some new faces and friends to the mix which greatly enhance the lives of the primary characters from the first novel. The story is so richly told that I found myself wishing I could check in as a guest at their resort and become one of their friends!
The book is rich with stories of the main characters, their friends and guests as they run their small business and start a non-profit organization to assist gay men in their rural area. The book is of a length that the author has time to really show us a lot about the lives of the characters depicted.
I described the first book in this series as a "cozy read" and I would have to say that this one is too. While there are heart in the throat moments, the love that binds the characters together as lovers and friends is strong. I would be thrilled to see even more of these characters in the future, should the author care to indulge us, and I will be checking out some of his other work soon.
This is a wonderful story. I was immediately drawn in by Theo's turmoil and the depth and caring of the other characters, especially Alex. Quentin and Harold will always have a special place in my heart. I also enjoyed the story's pace and the author's voice, but at least for me, it's the characters who keep me reading to the end. This author did not disappoint. 4.5 stars.

This book has it all. In "Beneath the Palisade Courage," a sequel to "Reliance," author Skelton deftly balances zany antics, compassion, wisdom--and hot sex. Ian, Harper and Alex are back to act as mentors and stand-in family to Theo, a young engine mechanic caught in an internal battle to find himself.
When we first meet, Theo is trapped in a scramble of confusion and guilt. At odds with a girlfriend he can't love, he also struggles to block his instinctive attraction to the men around him. Through his discovery of the Men's Center and his new circle of friends, Theo not only begins to define and value himself, but also to consider what a relationship with Alex might be like.
Into this mix drive Harold and Quentin, an older couple visiting Ian and Harper's Lake Superior resort with a special request to rent a cabin for the entire summer, allowing an ailing Quentin to be in a childhood place he always has loved. Skelton's story now becomes one that crosses generations, giving young Alex and Theo the opportunity to observe firsthand the beauty and power of a committed relationship between older men.
As near tragedy strikes and the book's theme of courage continues to unfold, it's clear this is more than a coming-of-age story. While Theo struggles to come out, he not only discovers his identity but also peace. How do we learn to survive, cope and thrive in a less-than-perfect world? It takes courage in all aspects of life. This is a touching story, lovingly rendered. I'm looking forward to book three.
Liked this one better that others I have read by this author. Still not overwhelmed by it. It was a pleasant read.
This is the second book I read by Joel. Each time I became friends with the characters and didn't want to leave them at the end of the book.
I enjoyed the character and story development. Topics were handled well and the story was interesting. Thanks Joel for another good read!
